our learning environment
Our learning environment is a purposeful and thoughtful space which sparks curiosity and imagination. The environment is filled with natural objects, real life items and authentic, open ended resources which, support children's learning and can be used in a multitude of ways.
Within the classroom there are many different areas for the children to explore with a variety of reading and writing opportunities based within these. Our indoor areas include; creative, writing and maths. The construction area provides children with the resources to plan, design and build their creations with a range of materials.
Literacy is always a key focus in class 1 with a weekly focus book providing a range of activities and enhancements to the classroom provision. Some examples of these are, The Jolly Christmas Postman, Funnybones and The Gruffalo. There is a cosy and well stocked library where children can relax with a book with their friends, with an adult or by them self.
Class 1’s outdoor area has access to a further range of writing and maths resources along with sand and water trays with a range of tools and digging equipment. Our mud kitchen provides a space for children to create a mud pie masterpiece. We aim to provide a range of diverse opportunities for all children to enjoy and explore as they grow with confidence and follow their individual pathways.
The children are at the centre of what we do at Bugthorpe and we aim to create a homely, cosy environment where children feel safe and comfortable. We feel that our calming, neutral colours and displays have a positive impact on our children's mood and behaviour. The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development.
Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.
Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.
As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design

In Foundation Stage, we use an electronic learning journey called Tapestry.
Through this secure site you will be able to see all the exciting things that your child has been doing while in school. You can also contribute to your child's learning journey by following the link above.

HOME LEARNING
READING
Your child will have 3 individual reading books per week for you to read/share at home. Please make sure you return your child’s reading books on a Monday ready to be changed.
PHONICS
Over the year, children in Reception will be given phonics homework to support their individual level of learning. This may be sounds to learn, letter formation to practise, words to decode or tricky words to read. The Twinkl scheme, validated by the Department of Education is used in class 1.
